Installing, refinishing, and fixing hardwood floors in Newton is what we do best, and we tailor our methods to fit the style of each home we work in. According to the U.S. Census, about half of Newton’s homes were built before 1939. These include Queen Annes and Italianates in Newtonville, Tudor Revivals in Chestnut Hill, Colonial Revivals on West Newton Hill, Craftsman bungalows in Auburndale, and Colonials and ranches from the middle of the 20th century in Waban and Oak Hill. Many narrow-strip oak, heart pine and wide-plank floors have been refinished more than once, so we check the wear layer again before deciding whether to suggest a full sand or a screen-and-recoat. We use dustless floor sanding by default in occupied family homes and multi-unit houses in Newton Corner and Chestnut Hill. We also use plastic film to block off rooms next to each other and run HEPA-filter dust control to cut airborne dust by about 90–95%.
We also have more high-end sanding systems, like the Lagler Trio, for bigger open-plan rooms, kitchen-dining combos, and estate-sized projects that need a smooth, “furniture-quality” surface free of chatter and edger marks. In Newton, installations need to be done with moisture first. NOAA climate normals for the Boston area show that humidity changes a lot from February to August, going from about 62% to 72%. In the winter, heating inside drops RH sharply. We bring the wood to room temperature on-site, measure the moisture levels of the subfloor and the planks, and need a difference of 4% or less before we glue or fix the wood. This is what keeps the boards tight through all four seasons in New England, and it’s a big reason why people choose Weles over other flooring companies in MA.
🌱 Promise to be eco-friendly
Our business is eco-friendly; we use quality wood from nearby sources and sealants that are safe for the environment. This is what we do to help Newton and the nearby places.
If you live in Newton, you should know that the four Local Historic District boards (Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newtonville, and Newton Upper Falls) do not have to approve any work done on the floors inside your home. The City of Newton’s Historic Preservation Ordinance says that all changes made to the inside of a building do not need to be reviewed by the committee. As long as you get species, widths, and styles that match the home’s age, you can fix up period floors without a Certificate of Appropriateness. When we restore wood floors, we make sure that the work lasts through the winters and summers in Newton.
